This refers to disorders of the Rectum and Anal Canal- which are the terminal parts of the large intestine. The act of Faecal evacuation, its control(continence) are the main function of Anorectum. Disorders of the anorectum are common.

These are enlarged veins in the anus which can cause bleeding and itching and pain. Causes include pregnancy, poor fibre intake in the diet, excessive straining, constipation. The piles could prolapse to the outside and cause severe acute pain- Thrombosed haemorrhoid.
A thorough evaluation of symptoms and clinical examination and sometimes further tests are needed to determine the cause of piles.

Treatment

  • Dietary adjeustments
  • Injection treatment
  • Banding
  • Surgical- Traditional Haemorrhoidectomy or Stapled Haemorrhoidectomy- to be
    discussed with the surgeon.

A fistula is a track between the inside of the anorectum and the outside skin. This is usually caused by a previous infection (abscess) at the skin just around and inside the Anal canal which. There are other causes like Crohn’s disease, TB etc. Treatment is with a surgical procedure and treatment of secondary causes if any.

This a collection of pus. It develops when a small anal gland becomes infected with bacteria. It can be very painful and may develop into other medical conditions such as an anal fistula. The abscess needs to be surgically drained.

Anal fissure is a tear in the skin of the anus and is a painful condition. Causes could be constipation and straining, inflammatory conditions, chronic diarrhoea etc.Treatment is by local ointment, aperients and sometimes with an operative procedure.
