Appendicitis is inflammation/infection of the appendix. Appendix is a tubular organ which is attached to the large intestine.
Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes blocked, often by stool, a foreign body, or cancer. Blockage may also occur from infection, since the appendix can swell in response to any infection in the body. Most common age group aafted is between 10-30 years.
Symptoms of Appendicitis
Sudden onset pain which can start around the navel but soon gets localised to the lower abdomen on the right side. This is accompanied by nausea/vomiting and fever.
Careful evaluation by clinical examination and scans and laboratory tests may be essential to rule out other conditions which cause right sided abdominal pain.
Treatment
Appendix is surgically removed with either a key hole technique (Laparoscopic appendicectomy) or with an open operation. The options could be discussed with the surgeon.
