The scalp, ears, back, face, and upper arm, scrotum are common sites of sebaceous cysts. The usual cause is a blocked duct of a sebaceous gland which results in enlargement of the gland. This could rupture discharging ‘sebum’ and also become infected. It can be unsightly especially on the face and exposed areas of the body. Treatment is with an operation, usually under local anaesthesia, where the affected gland is removed.

A lipoma is a growth of fat cells in a thin, fibrous capsule usually found just below the skin. They are found most often on the torso, neck, upper thighs, upper arms, and armpits, but they can occur almost anywhere in the body. What causes lipomas is not completely understood. Treatment is by operative removal, usually under local anaesthesia.

Abscess is a collection of pus, most often caused by a bacteria- Staphylococcus aureus. This could be secondary to an infected hair follicle, infected sebaceous cyst, and moor breaks and punctures of the skin which get infected. A fully develeloped abscess contains pus which needs surgical drainage to release the pus.
